In the fall of 2003, our family needed extra help in caring for my dad who had undergone multiple surgeries after many health complications over a period of years. In September, Dad’s health rapidly declined, and he underwent an extended stay in the hospital with life-threatening conditions. Our prayer was to get Dad back to the comfort of his own home. To everyone’s amazement, Dad rallied, and we were able to take him home, but with a bleak prognosis. Dad needed continual 24-hour care, and Mom and the rest of the family had already been pushed to the limits of exhaustion and emotional strain. At this point, upon a recommendation, we connected with Ginelle LeBlanc’s sitter service named In His Service which was a God-send for us. They entered our lives and became our extended family, genuinely caring for Dad and giving Mom respite from extensive “care-giving,” and helping us to “juggle” our schedules in order to care for Dad, in addition to our own families. Foremost, we were grateful for Ginelle’s flexibility in dealing with unpredictable schedules and challenging circumstances. The sitters not only made Daddy comfortable and met his basic needs, but they went beyond that to get to know him, listening to his war stories, talking about what Dad liked, from hunting to gardening, and when possible, even taking him by wheelchair out to the garden. Soon, Dad began to anticipate their coming. Not only did the sitters help Dad, but they were also sensitive to the needs of Mom and the rest of the family, offering compassion, understanding, and companionship during our difficult times. We were able to keep Dad at home, but we could not have done it without this extra help, for they filled in the gaps and helped to ease his quality life during his last months. When Dad passed to a better home in July of 2004, “letting go” was almost as difficult on the sitters as it was on the family, but they walked through that journey with us. We are grateful to Ginelle and, especially, the faithful and dutiful ones who ministered to the Eric Saucier family by being In His Service.
Sincerely, Carol Saucier Carter |
